Norfolk Naval Station - The world's largest Naval Station Naval Station, Norfolk occupies 3,400 acres of Hampton Roads in a peninsula known as Sewells Point. The Norfolk Naval Base (NNB) is located on 4,631 acres northwest of Norfolk, Virginia. The Naval Complex includes Norfolk Naval Base as well as other Naval facilities of the Sewells Point Naval Complex. When the 78 ships and 133 aircraft home ported here are not at sea, they are alongside one of the 14 piers or inside one of the 15 aircraft hangars for repair, refit, training and to provide the ship's or squadron's crew an opportunity to be with their families. Naval Station is homeport to aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, large amphibious ships, submarines, and supply and logistics ships. Port Services controls more than 3,100 ships' movements annually as they arrive/depart their berths. Port facilities extend four miles along the waterfront and include seven miles of pier and wharf space. Naval Station's Nimitz Hall is a major stopping-off point for people destined for ships, aircraft squadrons, and stations overseas. Colonial National Historical Park/Yorktown Battlefield - Colonial National Historical Park - administered by the National Park Service (NPS) - encompasses Yorktown Battlefield, s ite of the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War; Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America; the Colonial Parkway, which connects the Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown; Green Springs, a colonial period plantation developed by Royal Governor Sir William Berkeley; and Cape Henry, first landing site of the Jamestown Settlers in the new world on April 26, 1607, and where the Battle of the Capes was fought in 1781. These sites played significant roles in English colonial America. Cape Henry Lighthouse - Adjacent to the Cape Henry Memorial is the first lighthouse authorized by the Federal Government. Originally lit in 1792, the Cape Henry Lighthouse - an octagonal tower of cut stone - served until 1881 when a new one was built nearby. The tower, a Registered National Historic Landmark, is administered by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA). An admission fee of three dollars is required.
